The lesson is in law class, 23 pupils of the 11th grade of technological high school
This lesson aims to help students understand what active European citizenship is. It allows to recall what the European Union is and what makes it unique as well as the countries that are members. What does "being a European citizen" mean? What are the rights and duties related to this status?
Strengths:
- Development of self-awareness through the uniqueness, rights, duties and values of a European citizen
- Reinforcement of the sense of belonging to the EU which develops internal motivation
- Interaction and free expression of each pupil
- Development of creative, communicative and social skills
Weaknesses:
- Some students may have difficulties to transfer these principles to their daily lives.

Lesson Plan
1- First, the session will start with an exchange with the students to see how they perceive what it is to be a "European citizen" (5 minutes).
2- Then, we watch a video entitled "Citizenship, what is at stake for Europe? (source touteleurope.eu): https://www.touteleurope.eu/fonctionnement-de-l-ue/la-citoyennete-europeenne-en-3-minutes
It will lead to some questions. (15 minutes)
3- The students will answer a quiz in groups on the history of the EU in order to remember the main dates and the main founding principles of the EU. Game "What is the European Union?" https://europa.eu/learning-corner/quiz_fr (15 minutes)
4- Students will be asked to collaborate and create a mind map in groups summarizing what a "European citizen" is. (20 minutes).

Assessment
The teacher can assess the mind map and the interactions between the students to highlight that they understand how their actions and behaviors impact those around them.
