Chapter 3: Strategic Path and Practical Recommendations
3.3 Positive Relationship between Teachers and Pupils Based on Fundamental Values
Teachers embody fundamental values and the relationships between pupils and teachers have often been emphasized as important factors affecting students’ progress, engagement of school and academic motivation. When pupils and teachers work with a mutual feeling of understanding and cooperation, and common EU values such as tolerance and non-discrimination, a friendly atmosphere will result which is conducive to effective learning. On the contrary, teachers that are unfriendly or who antagonized their pupils promote resentment and cause a lack interest and incentive for learning.

Interactions between teacher and student are not only affected by many factors like gender but positive and supportive relationships between students and teacher ultimately increase an intelligence of belonging and motivate students to willingly take part in different classroom activities.

How can teachers create such an environment? It can be done by expressing confident expectations for every student, developing self-worth, giving students similar opportunities to take part in class discussion and motivate students that they are self-confident in their ability to succeed. It promotes a sense of belonging and encourages learners to take part cooperatively in study activities. No doubt a teacher who respects their students will get more respect from their students.

Communication is a huge part in a teacher-pupil relationship by combining good communication and listening skills the teacher can build up a good rapport with the pupil. It is equally important that teachers show their pupils how to welcome diversity.

Besides, effective behavior management is an essential tool when it comes to creating a positive and safe classroom where pupils are able to achieve their full potential.

All in all, teachers should provide a structured environment and adopt a good relationship with their pupils develop an environment where pupil’s emotional, academic and developmental needs are met.

Promoting EU citizenship and the common values of freedom, tolerance and non-discrimination through education helps to provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to debate, to develop critical thinking, play a full and active part not only in the classroom but all in society.

When European core values such as peace, equality and human rights are effective in the classroom, it contributes powerfully to shape the socialization of the younger generation.
